Dept. of Bad Ideas: The Introverts Bar and Lounge

I sometimes find myself wanting to go out to have a couple of drinks and catch up on my reading material, but hesitating because so many establishments are full of loud, raucous, drunken monkeys which is not conducive to my relaxation. So, another item on my list of things to do if I ever have a lot of money to throw around is build The Introverts Bar. This will feature:

  • Plenty of comfy seating.

  • Tables mostly sized for one or two people.

  • Small-plate nibbles.

  • Lighting appropriate for reading.

  • A somewhat elegant ambiance-- no need to get really dressed up, but not a place to schlump around in either.

  • A thoughtful collection of beer, wine, and liquors, mostly moderately priced. Not a place to bring ten friends and pound down five well drinks each, but not a place that people with mid-range incomes feel is out of reach.

  • Well-stocked bookshelves, some current magazine subscriptions, and a few boardgames.

  • Chill music.

  • Possibly some quiet pets-- maybe a fish tank, perhaps a cat.

  • No one asking you "Oh, just one?" when you come in. Ever.

Unfortunately, it might not be in San Francisco
Yeah, it's my goal to open and run such a bar when I'm, you know, rich. Or unemployed.

I wonder how the economics of it would actually work out. It sure seems like people drink more alcohol in groups (and I hear that's where the high margins are) and perhaps eat more food as well. Could it survive at a price point somewhere below "Palo Alto Yuppie"?

Probably not, but maybe the targeted audience of introverts would be willing to pay a premium for a location like that. Well - would you?

Actually yes, I'll pay a premium for less noise.

actually, that may sell.

Especially in the North Park/Normal Heights area.

Yah, that's possible. I must not be the only one who both doesn't want to live in a "quiet" neighborhood (i.e. suburbs) and doesn't want to wade through crowds of noisy people either.

(Here while surfing a friend's friend list.)

I would *live* at this place. Hoping for your big lottery win.

Sounds like a coffee shop to me.

Somewhat, except I don't drink coffee at night much any more.

I would love a bar like that.

When I want to get out of the house for a while and go read somewhere public, I head for a bubble-tea joint. I like bubble tea, and they don't mind if you occupy a table for a while as long as you're drinking, and since they don't serve booze, there's no problem with drunken louts. It's a brighter, somewhat noisier ambience than you're talking about here, but that doesn't bother me. And nobody has ever asked me "Just one?", ever.

Ah, good point, I had forgotten about pearl tea. I'm unfortunately without a good pearl tea vendor down here since the one I used to go to went way downhill.

sounds like a cross between a bar and the diogenes club that mycroft holmes used to frequent.

It occured to V and I as we were talking about this that it sure sounds like a variant of the classic gentlemen's club (at least as shown in movies).

my primary and insuperable complaint about bars is not the clientele, but the music, which is invariably played at earhurting and conversationkilling volume. i've pretty much stopped going altogether. also, it gets really expensive if you don't drink beer, but i wouldn't mind going out with friends for an occasional evening out if we could hear ourselves talk.

A former boyfriend of mine liked to go to Nunu's to eat dinner and read. Apparently, the lighting at some of the booths there are pretty good for reading.
